The project, launched in the wake of the encyclical Laudato Si’ and looking to the Synod for the Amazon scheduled on October 2019, wants to take on the problem of hunger and malnutrition by taking advantage of the international network of Catholic universities. Inter alia, the project wants to invest in training, that from young researchers be passed to students and finally to the local population. Two specific projects are planned:
– In the Amazon area of Peru, which is facing a serious pollution problem, the project would like to start a virtuous circle that from the food’s waste leads to the breeding of insects and then fish, a source of quality’ proteins for the indigenous population of Atalaya . From here, the model could be replicated in other regions of the Amazon basin.
– In Uganda, the project would like to invest in improving local seeds (beans, corn, millet, manioc) to increase the production and income of small farmers. Combining this intervention with specific measures, including technological ones, for food preservation it would significantly improve the health of the inhabitants.
The project would like to be extended to a third reality to identify in India, for the importance that this country has on the subject and further to increase the south-south collaboration (America - Africa - Asia).
The project aims to reduce hunger and malnutrition in Peru and Uganda. It works on it with an new approach, engaging the international network of Catholic universities in the training of young researchers, in transfer of innovative technologies, in mutual support (south-south cooperation). In this perspective, the real and most ambitious goal of the project is the conceptualization of an intervention model that can be applied to reduce hunger and malnutrition also in other countries.
